Cadillac has confirmed a surprising change in its product strategy, announcing the return of the XT6, its three-row mid-size SUV, with a traditional gasoline engine. This move comes after the company had previously indicated a firm commitment to phasing out internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and selling only electric models by the end of the decade, making this announcement a notable shift in their long-term vision.
Initially, Cadillac had planned to discontinue the XT6 after the 2025 model year, directing customers towards the all-electric Vistiq as its three-row SUV offering. However, recent sales data reveals that the electric Vistiq has struggled to match the XT6's previous performance, selling significantly fewer units. This market feedback appears to have influenced Cadillac's decision to bring back the popular gasoline-powered model.
While Cadillac has not provided an exact launch date for the revived XT6, it has been indicated that the SUV will arrive after the updated XT5, which is scheduled for a complete redesign in the upcoming year. This staggered release suggests a careful and strategic approach to reintroducing the XT6 into the market, ensuring it aligns with other significant product updates.
The decision to reintroduce a gasoline-powered XT6 represents a noticeable step back from Cadillac's ambitious, once-unwavering pledge to exclusively offer electric vehicles by 2030. This adjustment in strategy, however, is not entirely unexpected, given earlier reports of a second-generation CT5 sedan and the planned refresh for the XT5, indicating a more flexible approach to its vehicle lineup in response to evolving market demands and consumer preferences.
